Pan Devils Steel Band
Founded in 1991 by J.B. Smith, director of percussion studies, the Pan Devils Steel Band in the ASU Herberger Institute School of Music, Dance and Theatre has entertained campus, public school and community audiences throughout the state. The band, whose members are undergraduate and graduate students, brings the energetic sounds of the West Indies to its performances and showcases the steel drum, or pan, a unique musical instrument that has its origins in Trinidad.
Beginning with a 55-gallon oil drum, the creation of a steel drum includes pounding, tempering with fire and water and then painstakingly grooving each note into the metal. Today, the steel drum is popular throughout the world and has gained acceptance as a serious musical instrument. It can be found in calypso bands, rock bands, classical ensembles, jazz combos and about any other kind of music ensemble imaginable.

Audition information
An override is required for students to register for the class. Once permission is received to join the band, send your name and ASU student ID number to Michael Compitello.
An audition is not required for music majors, however, due to limited enrollment interested students will need to confer with the director to determine availability. Non-majors should prepare a short composition on an instrument of their choosing and be prepared to sight-read a melodic passage on the same instrument. Music reading skills are required. Contact Michael Compitello to arrange a time during the week before classes begin.
